Vicki 's Review of The Lake of Dreams

Kim Edwards, author of The Memory Keepers Daughter, is a wonderful storyteller, revealing skeletons in this family's closet.  In this second novel she delves into the lives of a family in upstate New York.

Lucy Jarrett lives in Japan with her partner Yoshi, but returns to her home in Lake of Dreams, in New York State's Finger Lakes District.  Since her father's accidental drowning 10 years previously, she's only been home for sporadic visits.  She's currently unemployed and feeling jittery about living in Japan where there are daily occurrences of small earthquakes.  Adding to her unease, her mother and brother are moving on with their lives since the accident, yet Lucy can't seem to let go of the past.

Then Lucy discovers a batch of old letters that have been hidden away for a generation that seem to reveal a long hidden ancestor.  As she attempts to unravel the mystery of this unknown relative, she begins to answer some of the haunting questions about her own life, and the lives of those around her.

I love Edward's ability to describe in vivid detail the different settings in the novel like her home in Japan or the Finger Lakes District in New York.  Her characters are realistic and captivating.  I'm sure that if you loved The Memory Keepers Daughter you will once again be riveted to this well-written suspenseful saga.
