Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,
My pile of books is a mile high.
How I love them!  How I need them!
I'll have a long beard by the time I read them.

Vicki 's Review of The Bone Cage

Another Canada Reads nominee, The Bone Cage relates the stories of two athletes preparing for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.  It follows the trials and tribulations of Sadie, a swimmer and Digger, a wrestler.  The reader discovers the physical and psychological struggles that they must overcome on a daily, monthly and even yearly basis.

Abdou draws the reader in as she describes their grueling daily training sessions and what they each have given up in their lives to get to this point.  Our eyes are opened to the sacrifices and dedication that is required by any athlete when participating in sport.

This novel opened my eyes to what athletes must invest in all aspects of their lives to get to that podium.  An easy and satisfying read.
