The question is “would you if you could?”…. but more importantly “should you”? In Stephen King’s latest novel he explores the concept of time travel and the consequences that may occur. It’s the story of high school teacher, Jake Epping, who has been enlisted by a local diner owner, Al, to travel back in time through a “rabbit hole” portal found in the storeroom of his diner. Al wants Jake to go back to the year 1958 specifically to stop the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1962. The portal always sends the traveler to the same date in September of 1958, so Jake will have to live in the past for five years before he can accomplish his task. Reluctantly Jake takes on the mission and becomes George Amberson for the next five years. The tale that emerges is an historical, thriller, love story, unlike anything King has ever written. This is not your typical creepy, weird, monster-under-the-bed Stephen King novel but it IS typically suspenseful and a page-turner. Surprisingly it’s also a beautiful and touching love story. Although it is a little long (great for the cottage), I think this novel will appeal to both the avid Stephen King fan and to those who have never read him before. Who knew King could write about love, goodness and honest emotion? |
