CBA LIBRIS BOOKSELLER OF THE YEAR - 2011
Vicki 's Review of I Am Half Sick Of Shadows
Alan Bradley’s fourth Flavia de Luce mystery does not disappoint. Flavia, an eleven- year- old amateur sleuth and self-taught mad scientist, once again finds herself in the middle of a horrifying murder investigation.
Christmas has come to Buckshaw Manor and so has a raging snow blizzard. To try and earn some funds to enable them to remain in the family home Flavia’s father rents it out to a film company. The much-loved film star Phyllis Wyvern arrives with her entourage and her mysterious past. Meanwhile Flavia is busily working on a plan to trap Father Christmas on Christmas Eve to prove her cruel sisters wrong about his existence. Things go from bad to worst when half the village arrives on Christmas Eve eve to view an impromptu performance of Phyllis and her co-star acting out a scene from Romeo and Juliet. Everyone is snowed in and of course someone is murdered! Our endearing and ever-resourceful heroine once again finds herself smack in the middle of the investigation.
I love Flavia de Luce. She’s smart, hilarious and just an enchanting little girl who has learned to amuse herself in a big lonely house with nasty older sisters and a somewhat absent father. You admire this resourceful young lady and the remarkable characters that surround her. As always, Bradley has created a novel that is full of surprises and clever witticisms. This series would be a wonderful Christmas gift for all who love a great mystery entwined with whimsy!
