Bookseller of the Year 2011!
The Book Keeper, Sarnia-Lambton's independent bookstore is the Canadian Booksellers Association's Libris Award winner for Bookseller of the Year 2011!
A total of 13 Libris Awards were given out at the CBA National Conference in Toronto on Saturday, May 14. Other winners included: Author of the Year for her novel, ROOM, Emma Donoghue, Specialty Bookseller of the Year, The Flying Dragon Bookshop in Toronto and Publisher of the Year, Penguin Group Canada.
Owner, Susan Chamberlain and manager, Julie Vrolyk attended the awards dinner. The Bookseller of the Year is the final award of the evening which made for a very tense dinner for the local booksellers. "It's hard to eat dinner and appear relaxed when really you are so excited and nervously anticipating all the possible outcomes," says Susan. Julie was quick to post the win on Facebook so that everyone at home could know the good news.
The Book Keeper was also nominated for this award last year when the prize went to the Bookmark II in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This time around the local store was nominated with : Blue Heron Books in Uxbridge, Ontario and Westminster Books in Fredricton, New Brunswick. Susan notes that she was stunned and thrilled by this second nomination. "In my mind I had considered last year our 'once in a lifetime shot' at the award, so I was reeling when I received the phone call informing me of the nomination." That being said, The Book Keeper is actually a two time Libris Award winning bookstore. In 1994, when the store was owned by well-known bookseller, Kathy Mitchell, The Book Keeper was also a winner of the same award.
The residents of Sarnia-Lambton should be proud to have built, by their patronage, such a strong and vital bookstore. The booksellers at The Book Keeper are proud and honoured to serve this generous community.
